Grants of $90,000 per year to Ohio researchers for studies related to local wines and other products made from grapes. Funding is intended to support original basic and applied research projects to enhance the quality of the State's wines and grape products made from midwestern-grown grapes, juice, and/or bulk wine. Research partnerships and collaborative projects are strongly encouraged. Principal investigators may be located within or outside of Ohio.

The priorities for enology research focus on producing premium quality wine in Ohio include:

  • Chemical composition and modification
  • Control of off-characters
  • Effect and management of microorganisms on wine quality
  • Fermentation technology
  • Fruit composition and extraction
  • Method development/process optimization
  • Process technology and aging stuck/sluggish fermentations
  • Wine stability.

Estimated Size of Grant:

$90,000 per year or $180,000 in total.

Term of Contract:

Two years: July 1, 2021-June 30, 2023

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Principal investigators may be located within or outside of Ohio.

Indirect costs/overhead charges are not covered. Awards cannot be used for tuition, tuition reimbursement, or travel not related directly to the project.
