Grants of up to $10,000 to Ohio organizations, government agencies, schools, and conservation groups for environmental learning and fishing activities. Funding is intended to support projects that provide a hands-on opportunity, include an educational component, increase aquatic stewardship, and enable sportfishing participation. Funds may be used for activities such as aquarium and associated equipment for the classroom, teen fishing retreats, and water quality and fish monitoring programs.

Applicants should address the following criteria:

  • The project must include an opportunity for the participants to engage in an aquatic education learning experience. 
  • Projects that include a hands-on fishing opportunity are preferred.

Programs consisting of all R3 components (recruitment, retention and reactivation) are highly recommended. (Information regarding R3 can be found at:

Estimated Size of Grant:

An organization can apply for up to $10,000 total per fiscal year, which can be divided between project proposals.

Term of Contract:

Events must take place between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Schools, park and recreation departments, conservation groups, local governments, and other organizations that have Federal Tax ID Number and want to sponsor an angler education program within Ohio are eligible.

Multiple agencies may work cooperatively to conduct a program or event.

Private individuals are not eligible.

All activities supported by the ODNR Division of Wildlife must be open to all citizens regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, mobility, visual disabilities, or learning disabilities. Risk management and safety considerations, however, may limit active participation by some age or ability groups.

Activities involving competition are not eligible.

Pre-Application Information:

The application is currently open for events taking place July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022. The application will close March 15, 2021,11:59pm.

Proposals will be organized by score and awarded until funding is exhausted for the grant cycle.

All grant recipients must have a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number that is registered with the federal government’s System for Award Management (SAM). It may take 2-3 days for you to obtain a DUNS number, and it may take 3 business days or up to 2 weeks before your SAM registration becomes active. Please note that once you have been assigned a DUNS number, you must annually register on to remain eligible to receive program financial assistance.

In addition, your organization must also be registered with the Ohio Secretary of State. If you do not meet this requirement you may still apply; however, you will not be able to receive the grant payment until the requirement is satisfied.

The grant recipient is responsible for all safety and risk management concerns. The ODNR Division of Wildlife does not accept any liability for damage or injury resulting from activities supported through the Aquatic Education Grant. The cost of liability insurance, however, can be purchased with grant funds.
